My Profession: Editorial & Features
About my work:
I'm a professional multi-tasker. By working as a freelancer, I'm able to use my talents in the creative arts, and encourage others to discover, develop and use their talents. A BS degree in music education prepared me to teach and built upon my immersion in music from birth. As the daughter of a Church of Christ preacher, I grew up hearing and singing 4-part harmony without instrumental accompaniment. This taught me more than music; it taught me the beauty of collaboration, and that every voice is unique and should be heard. My work as a writer and editor has provided another outlet for my creative energy. My writing allows me to speak my own mind (2 children's books, 1 YA non-fiction book, multiple feature magazine articles based on interviews with celebrity cancer survivors, a column on family issues, and multiple essays), and my editing allows me to help others do the same. I'm passionate about the value of a good editor, whom I define as someone who can carve away that which obscures the message while leaving the author's voice intact. I have written, directed and produced multiple plays and skits, and am currently co-writing the first of a trilogy of plays. My editing experiences range from magazines to books. I've served as graphic designer/editor of two professional newsletters. I've facilitated creativity workshops for 12 years, encouraging participants to recognize, develop and use their talents.
