About my work:
In this time of economic uncertainty and hardship, Jeff McDonald’s works focus on timeless spiritual ideals, a glimmer of hope and peace set against a backdrop of chaos and noise.Continuing in the tradition of Robert Rauschenberg and Antoni Tàpies, Jeff’s art plays with texture and layers, challenging the viewer’s understanding and expectations of the boundaries between painting and sculpture, employing a mixed media, multi-layered approach which incorporates contrasting textural elements and also found objects (such as the distressed wood in this series, but also broken windows, fabrics and other elements in earlier works).
Jeff’s fascination with Asian culture is also apparent in both phrases in kanji/hanzi characters (Japanese/Chinese characters for words or expressions) as well as the silkscreen prints of Asian deities and spiritual figures.
Jeff has been painting for over 20 years but also has an MFA in Directing from UC-Irvine and directs and writes films.
