GLOBAL YAWNING for a small planet

GLOBAL YAWNING for a small planet A new day is yawning! Jay Critchley Its been shown that yawning increases alertness, reduces stress and enhances personal, community and planetary health. We yawn to cool the brain we act to cool the Earth. The personal is planetary. What is our exhausted planet telling us? This project investigates this idea, recognizing that the green chic of climate change has sabotaged the radical actions necessary to confront it, and desensitized us to our own bodily participation in it. Yawning is mysterious and without definitive explanation. One theory is that yawning is a herd instinct, and serves to synchronize mood behavior among gregarious animals. Adelie Penguins employ yawning as part of their courtship ritual. All agree, yawning feels good - when we allow ourselves to yawn unrestricted, to break through the social embarrassment. It is an essential human activity that crosses cultural and geographic borders, and can be liberating, re-energizing and therapeutic. Global Yawning is a humorous play on words, asking us as responsible human beings, with all our vulnerabilities, to become the creators of a healthy planet. It is also a study in human portraiture. The human face and portraiture have been the subject and intrigue of artists for millennium - its beauty, character, personality, form, color - who have captured its moods and distinguished features. Yawning has received scant attention and examination. Yet it is an essential human activity that crosses cultural and geographic borders, and can be liberating, re-energizing and therapeutic. The project was initiated at the Boston Center for the Arts Mills Gallery in February 2008, with videotaped participants from Provincetown, Boston, Rhode Island, New York City and Washington, DC. Global Yawning was featured and created at the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics Encuentro in Bogota, Columbia in 2009.
