Until a few years ago, I was known as a sculptor and performance artist. Primarily, I created large scale “environmental installations” in which I performed “religious rituals” as performance art. For these, I decorated entire rooms with silk-screened wall-papers and hand-sewn flags; built and decorated armoire-sized “shrines” populated by figures in elaborate costumes. Garbed in one of my own creations, I was temporarily transformed into a kind of deity or shaman, mediating between the earthly and divine realms, embodying something greater than myself.. Viewers who entered into these sacred spaces of my creation, found themselves drawn into a mysterious ritual of no specific existing religion, bringing to it their own their emotions and personal histories. Often, visitors reported profound religious experiences. Many of the costumes and items used in these performances are now in major museums and collections throughout the world. Most recently, one was purchased by the Jewish Museum in NYC and included in the book “Masterworks of the Jewish Museum”. Five years ago, inspired by a book of 19th century erotic photographs, I began taking nude portraits. At first, it was merely a whim, a diversion between exhibitions of my more serious work. My desire was to simply create a beautiful image. I bought an old-fashioned large format camera, created a set in my studio, paid a model, and took some pictures. . The results were so beautiful, I had such a wonderful time doing it, and the response to the photographs was so strong, I felt as if I was really on to something. I put aside my other work and dedicated myself to the photography. I created a website to display my photos and get some feedback. It didn’t take long before models found my site and asked to pose for me, free. They came from all over the country, and then from all over the world -- as far off as Iceland and Italy, at their own expense -- to participate in my work. Once again, this time in my own studio, I set the stage, provided the costumes, and allowed my subjects to play a role. Inhabiting this fantastic version of themselves, they became transformed into something else, embodying an image of transcendent beauty and sexuality. By losing themselves in a role, they revealed themselves. They were able to expose themselves in the most intimate of ways while hiding behind the role they were playing. One after another expressed how strongly they wanted to show themselves to the world and how exciting, liberating and empowering the experience was. Initially, I used props that I found at yard sales, thrift shops, and discount stores. Costume jewelry, lace and silk blouses, stockings, shawls, etc. I furnished my sets with things I’d collected over the years traveling all over the world -- Turkish carpets, Moroccan kilims, silks from India and Thailand. Some props I built myself. Backdrops were rich brocade upholstery fabric, purchased in the many fabric stores in Manhattan’s garment district. The longer I worked in this medium, the more I wanted my imprint on everything. I began to design and make elaborate costumes and jewelry specifically for each of my subjects. Draped in my robes and encrusted in fabulous jewels and crowns, they become some kind of fantastic royal figures. My models come from all walks of life -- artists, dancers, burlesque performers, as well as psychologists, archeologists, marketing executives, students, housewives, even physicists, ranging in age from 18 to 50. Although I shoot mostly women, I have also photographed men, couples and the transgendered. The one trait they share is a burning need to display their sexual and personal selves to others, and to be able to see themselves, both as they truly are and, at the same time, as the most ideal vision of themselves.

His career ambitions would be to become an animator for Walt Disney, but by the time he reached his senior year in high school, his interest had shifted to photography and interactive (web) design. He had also had a short career at 16 years old as an inker for an acclaimed comic book which was produced in Canada. After graduating high school, Van Oss immediately found himself working at startup .com companies in Dallas TX as an interactive designer, in charge of large teams of interactive developers at only 18 years old. The .com burst was about to happen, though Van Oss would continue to find well paying work as a designer and decided to not go to college so he could remain on top of the fast evolving technology industry. At 19 he joined the eCommerce concept and design team at Verizon Communication headquarters in Irving TX where he stayed for 3 years During his time at Verizon, Van Oss suffered a massive brain bleed as a result from a malformed artery in his brain that had gone undetected since birth. Van Oss was just 5 days short of his 20th birthday. The bleed resulted in a loss of 50% of his vision in both eyes rendering him legally blind and unable to drive, no peripheral vision to his left, and with troubles working in a design driven position. Months later, he underwent brain surgery at Zale Lipshy University Hospital in Dallas TX to repair the artery and remove the blood that had destryed his optic track. The surgery was successful in those regards, but when he awoke, he found that the left side of his body was completely paralyzed, Van Oss was now a hemi-paretic, the left side of his body was non-functional. He spent a month in the hospital in intense physical therapy sessions learning how to walk again and how to go about daily life with a cane and with only 1 hand to use. Outpatient physical therapy continued for next few years resulting in an 70% gain in the use of his leg. His arm never recovered. Van Oss has continued to pursue his artistic ambitions post-surgery, produced a body of work for his first one man gallery exhbition at the Jeanette Kennedy Gallery in Dallas TX in January of 2004. He has also exhibited in a number of group shows in Dallas benefiting several charities. Van Oss has since relocated to New York City, NY where he has become a noted fashion photographer. he continued to work in web design in New York for compaies like NBC and Prudential financial, DDB Worldwide, but has recently retired from the web design industry to focus all his creativity on painting, photography and a recent dive into screenwriting for film. He attended the NY Film Academy briefly to study screenwriting.

Creativity was at the top of my family’s list and was brought out through theatre camp, art classes and dance. At 8 years old, I bought a camera at a local garage sale and began photographing at the park, family gatherings and other events. I have been photographing ever sense. I was bitten by the artistic bug and have continued down that path for the last 20 years. After taking an “Intro to Photography” class at The University of Texas, I was ready to make photography my career path. I left UT in 2000 and began classes at Austin Community College (ACC). Luckily for me, they had greater access to equipment and topnotch darkroom facilities. As I worked my way through various photo classes, I fell in love with the process and romantic feel of the 4x5 camera. During my thesis class, I set out to do a project that would be a way for me to pay homage to my beloved Texas. I packed a huge 4x5 in the car and drove east, towards Houston. I began photographing the interiors of various old Texas homes. Some of them belonged to acquaintances and for the others I just knocked on doors and asked the owners “May I come in a take some photos of your lovely home?” The series was formally presented at the ACC photo showcase as museum matted, warm toned fiber prints. It turned out to be a beautiful gesture to these shrines of history. I completed the ACC program in 2003, earning myself an Associate’s in Photography. I then transferred to The School of the Art Institute in Chicago in June 2004. In my first semester I had the luxury of moving beyond the embedded technical emphasis of photography and into a conceptual way of viewing my work. Through the guidance of a professor, I developed my first installation. It was a personal piece that dealt with the absence of my late grandfather at my upcoming wedding. I honored him by incorporating photographs of a garden scene on silk banners, a wedding gown adorned with the image of his obituary face and photos of his belongings. The project was powerful and was later displayed at Austin’s Art Outside in a glorious tree-filled scene. While at SAIC, I took on many courses ranging from Art Therapy to Digital Photography, all which pushed my conceptual thought. SAIC catapulted me into new ways of viewing my work and challenged me with new methods of working. I graduated in May 2005 from SAIC with a BFA in Photography. Shortly after finishing school, I worked as a photographer at a cutting edge children’s portrait studio, in Chicago. My husband and I moved back to Austin in May 2007 and I am currently working as an assistant/PR representative for a local photographer. I am also promoting my free-lance work and I am looking forward to my time back in Austin and forming new relationships with the surroundings and with eager and willing clients!

I am able to foresee and evaluate potential problems, and deal with the unexpected in a calm and efficient manner. I started with Pentax K1000 and a Vivitar telephoto lense for traditional film shoots and manual printing, to now being a part of the digital age of production where barley anyone has heard of or knows how to spot or what the now extinct E6 process can do to C41 film. The cameras shoot 10 frames a second and you do not even have to re-load. My work used to be a very difficult trade to perform. Now a days, its what you shoot and when. I am a member of various photo organizations and have the capabilities and experience to get credentialed pretty much wherever my creativity takes me.

Shooting in popular nightclubs with up and coming stars gained her popularity. By 1996 she found herself alongside Incubus, 311, Sugar Ray, Black Eyed Peas, Save Ferris, Hoobastank and many more. She also found herself traveling to Europe, Hawaii and all throughout the states photographing concerts. “It’s hard to be on the road for months at a time but someone has to do it!” Ginger spent 2 years traveling and decided to settle sown but never stop taking pictures. She has worked freelance with magazines and is always capturing the beauty around her which has now became a wonderful collection of vivid images and memories. Ginger’s goal now, at age 34 is to showcase her works throughout the country. Doing art shows locally and always looking for new galleries. She has established a good local business doing weddings and other portraits. Her work gets special appreciation as it is a “new” perspective on the world or many of her customers. It is often pure chance and luck that I capture a particular shadow photograph and what makes them so special. If I came along just a minute earlier or later I could have missed the shot entirely.

While the outlets may vary, all of the work done by RFCL is process driven and the end product is given little, if any, consideration, so that attention is devoted solely to the act of creating.
