WRITING SAMPLES:
Title: Eco Maniac: Putting the 'Eco' in Economic Justice
Type: blog post
Description: weekly environmental commentary series
Sample: As the campaign really gets rolling in the U.S., I find myself in the middle of discussions about issues — the environment, gay rights, women's rights, the war, health care and so on. While all of those things are incredibly important to me, I keep coming back to the belief that economic justice is actually the first thing that needs to be addressed. My argument (and others') is that if people can't afford to feed themselves, they certainly can't afford to worry about the environment or any of (more...)
Title: Aural Fixation: k.d. lang... Dancing Barefoot
Type: blog post
Description: weekly music review series
Sample: I've loved k.d. lang since 1990. She was a great inspiration for my becoming a vegetarian and a role model during my coming out process. For these things alone, I am deeply grateful. But she has given and continues to give me so much more

I saw her in concert in Santa Barbara after not seeing her for at least 12 years. It was like reconnecting with an old, dear friend. Watching her roam the stage in her bare feet, vest and tie, singing flawlessly all the while, I remembered why and how much (more...)
Title: Kelly Picks a Fight: Blind Eyes
Type: blog post
Description: weekly social commentary series
Sample: In my opinion, the best television show ever was "The West Wing." It made us think, laugh, cry and understand. It took on complicated issues, both political and personal. It was often prescient in its storytelling, and always flawless and compassionate showing us the humanity behind the stolid veneer of a world leader's milieu

Two episodes that come to mind lately were the ones that dealt with genocide in a developing country and extending an agreement with a country that (without (more...)
Title: Kelly Picks a Fight: Not-so-Slick Ricks
Type: blog post
Description: weekly social commentary series
Sample: What is it about Ricks lately that's making them be such spotlight mongers

First off, we have Rick Perry, governor of Texas. Glomming onto the tax-day teabag parties to bogart a little “We Hate Obama” and/or “Taxes Ain't Fair” mojo, Perry made not-so-thinly veiled statements about his Lonestar State's possible move toward secession from the union: "There's a lot of different scenarios," Perry said. "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if W (more...)
Title: Eco Maniac: Will We or Won't We?
Type: blog post
Description: weekly environmental commentary series
Sample: We've all heard the argument that technologies are in place right now that can get us off of petroleum products and preserve our natural environments, that it's the political will that's missing. A few posts on Facebook this morning seem to back up that hypothesis

First is Thomas Friedman's New York Times column from Saturday about Costa Rica. That country has done amazing things by simply planning ahead. “As a result, Costa Rica hugely invested in hydro-electric power, wind and geo-therma (more...)
Title: Aural Fixation: The Politics of Music
Type: blog post
Description: weekly music series
Sample: A week or so ago someone sent me a message about Katy Perry's hits that are both homo-themed – “UR So Gay” and “I Kissed a Girl.” Honestly, I had never even heard her songs, though I'd seen her name bandied about, so I couldn't comment too much on the alleged homophobia contained in the tunes

I've now listened to those two songs and get why they are questionable in terms of content. It was one thing when a bisexual (but closeted at the time) Jill Sobule sang “I Kissed a Girl” back in the mid (more...)
