My Vision of Peace
It was a soft sunny day but for the wind which continually blew my materials and easel around. I needed to let go of my preconceived notions of how the painting should go and started playing with the wind, deconstructing and reconstructing the landscape until a peaceful, energetic scene emerged which pleased me. If we are to have peace in this world, I believe we need to let go of rigid visions, based on the past, of how things should be in the future, open ourselves to the ways the natural world beyond our control is speaking to us, warning us, and appreciate the continuing activity that real peace requires. When we have such vision, we will be motivated by hope, open to new awareness from whomever and wherever it comes. Love requires trust, trust requires open observation, peace requires that we love.

This is an excerpt from a 16"x20" oil painting, painted en plein air with brush and palette knife.

I like the spontaneity of plein air....it makes you paint what's happening in nature to the landscape and not the landscape itself....I had never really thought about it before, but you are right, there is an analogy there to allowing peace to happen rather than trying to orchestrate it according to our own definitions.
