My Vision of Peace
People come to cities to transform themselves. Cities attract young and old -- anyone in search of a different future, an expanded horizon, or just more money. In the best modern cities, different cultures live side by side in harmony, influencing one another. The greatness of a city is not just its amenities, but its cultural variety.

When Italo Calvino wrote Cittá Invisibili (Invisible Cities), he commented: "I think I have written something like a final love poem to cities, in a moment when it is becoming increasingly difficult to experience them as cities." I turn this sentiment around, making visible cities, which the viewer is invited to experience. But like Calvino, my cities are invented, not particularized or recognizable, standing, in some sense, for every city.

Medium
I "build" my cities using the printmaking medium (mostly linocuts). I use multiple prints of several images to create large and small cityscapes. Sometimes the prints overlap, and sometimes they are merely juxtaposed. I make vertical cities, horizontal cities, and irregular polygonal cities. Often, a river flows through, simultaneously connecting and dividing. Sometimes I build cities in book form, since we don't often experience a city all at once. Turning the page is like rounding a corner, discovering a new neighborhood, block-by-block.
