My Vision of Peace
I painted Look to the West not long after coming to California. Leaving the East Coast and driving across the country made me question so many things about who I am as an Artist and how I am going to make a difference. While I try not to think about a viewers reaction when I am painting, I do find myself hoping that what I create makes others feel joy. The joy that I feel when I am working. I am at total peace with myself when I am painting. I spend a good part of my day looking after others and making sure that everyone has what they need to make their day go smoothly so they can accomplish great things. So when I get to my easel I would like to think I am expressing my gratitude for such a beautiful life. Painting Look to the West was just that an expression of gratitude... a day spent driving along the coastline marveling at the changefullness and vast differences of both the east and west coasts and how the experiences are shaping me as an Artist. To be able to share that joy in a painting that is Peace for me. People have said this is a peaceful painting and I believe it's because I was so happy when I painted it.

Medium
The panel was cut and glued on to pine boards... I hammered nails all around the perimeter to create rustic texture when I stained the panel with an burnt umber and burnt sienna oil glaze before painting. Then I just painted layers and layers and more layers of oil glazes using lots of terpentine and artists painting medium.

When I first clicked on this my thought was "OOOoooo...." :) I love your description too, I'm also from the east coast, and drove across the country to the west. A drive along the coast here definitely feels like that!

Susan,
This piece is so relaxing. I love the layered blues and bright colors. It makes me happy to know that YOU are so at peace with your work.
