My Vision of Peace
The title comes from the famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi "There is no path to peace. Peace is the path." That quote brought me comfort recently when I was ill. I learned to be peaceful in the moment, regardless of what might be in the future.

The tree is a bitter orange tree, melangolo, that I discovered in a 12th century sanitorium garden in Rome. It seemed almost miraculous that the tree was still bearing fruit after 900 years! The tree symbolizes rejuvenation, and the white bird represents being open to peace and joy as a way of life, and letting go of the past.

Medium
This painting is oil on canvas, and took 6 months to complete. THe figure is based on a man I saw walking down the street in Tunisia, carrying an elaborate birdcage. The dress pattern was inspired by a Persian rug. The tree was in real life much larger, in Rome. The bridge is from Florence and the mountains are based on the Sandia Mountains of New Mexico.
