My Vision of Peace
This little girls lives in an orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. I first visited the kids there about six months after the devastating earthquake and expected to see a lot of sadness and chaos. While there was certainly a lot of chaos still and sadness as well, I was amazed at the joy and laughter I encountered from the children and adults. If the Haitian people can laugh like this and feel and express such joy amidst all of the tragedies and violence they have endured throughout their history, surely the rest of us can manage to smile at one another and spread some love, too!

Medium
This is a pastel on sanded paper to which I added a layer of pumice/gesso for added texture. The paper is stretched on stretcher bars like a canvas. The underpainting was created using watercolor, but the final layer is dry (soft) pastel. The original painting measure 24x20" (inches).

Wonderful work...and I really understand where you're coming from. I have said much of the same thing about the people in Sierra Leone. We have so much to learn from people. Thanks for the insight and the beautiful submission.

Wow, this looks like a photo it's so clear -- the shading is unreal! Great submission.

I grew up in the Caribbean, and that painting reminded me of my old friends!! Thanks
