My Vision of Peace
This submission articulates two planes of being which together depict the unshakable grace of Tibetan refugees. The level under water supports and informs two lotus flowers, rising above. In the water's level, behind glass, lie newspaper clips documenting the 1950's invasion of Tibet by China; a photo of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, Tibetan Buddhism's 11th Panchen Lama, who was 8 years old when taken into custody by Chinese police in 1996 and never seen again; and general detritus, like incense box packaging, the remainders of quotidian life. The piece as a whole evokes for me the Tibetan people I've met in India who, despite hardship and injustice, remain strong, committed to preserving and sharing their sustaining centuries-old wisdom traditions, and to benefiting all creatures on Earth. In the face of atrocity, they nonetheless live in peace, attuned to history, yet alive to the fullness of the present and the possibilities of the future.

Medium
Glass mosaic on wood board with underlying collage using newspaper clips, photographs and litter.

I also would love to see this in person. I love that the image goes beyond the glass and has the depth of what is under the glass!
