Peace in Rwanda

My Vision of Peace
I spent 2 life-changing weeks in Volcano National Park with mountain gorillas in the Spring of 2011. Nothing is more peaceful than sitting among these gentle giants and their babies. At 10 am on May 4, this gorilla momma and her baby sat down against a tree and gazed into their forest with a look of complete joy. This image reminds me that true peace is holistic. These 2 extraordinary creatures are alive because Rwandans have found peace since the civil war in 1994. Between half a million and a million people out of Rwanda's total population of 8 million, died in a few weeks between April and June 1994. The U.N. and the Rwandan, French and U.S. governments all played a role in what happened. We must remember that humans are not the only ones who suffer in war. Forests are burned, animals are killed and ecosystems are destroyed. Peace starts with each of us and ultimately effects all life.

Medium
My intention is always to first find peace within myself, then extend my heart through the camera and touch the essence of whatever I am photographing. Being calm and grounded is especially important when I photograph wild animals at close range. I am constantly aware that I am a guest in their home. Ultimately, my wish for the viewer is to come to a deeper connection with what is in the image so that I may foster peace and joy on the planet for all living beings. I used a Canon 1D Mark IV, ISO 8000 (because of the dark forest canopy), with a 100-400 lens.

Wow...what an incredible capture. No one could possibly doubt the intelligence and emotional capacity of gorillas after seeing this image.
