My Vision of Peace
I recently took a trip to La Republica Dominicana to continue my series on exploring poverty. I came across a young boy, standing completely surrounded by pigeons. Growing up in New York City where pigeons are usually pushed away or dismissed, I was completely shocked and overwhelmed with energy and excitement watching this boy exercising control and feeding these pigeons with such precision and pride. I photographed him for nearly two hours, capturing his essence and joy performing this task.

I decided to submit this photo to The Peace Project because in that moment I felt I captured this boys tranquility and sense of duty to his task at hand feeding the pigeons. He commanded such presence and authority while the pigeons followed his directions. Similarly to my previous submission of the Tenderloin, San Francisco, I experienced capturing such a beautiful and peaceful moment in the streets of Santo Domingo that seemed as though time was frozen in that still moment.

yes, we look for the grand moment and gesture and really (for me) it comes down to times like this, with the observer and actor being being present and being as present as possible
