My Vision of Peace
I created my piece inspired by my own experience in a boarding school in United States. The people depicted are my closest friends in the school who are all from different cultures and backgrounds--economic, social, and political, and I am the girl in the bottom right painted with myriad of colors. The color, the birds, and my friends' portrayals streaming out of the girl's hands represent the embracing and understanding relationship I developed with my friends. The surrounding typography consists of many sayings that encourage appreciation of dissimilarity, and that foster love of one's uniqueness and other's as well. I believe that this work illustrating my relationship with my friends depicts the peace, love, and understanding that seems to be necessary among the citizens of current society full of people with differences. Just as my friendship continues to be strong, genuine, and compassionate, world peace and true harmony will become closer if we embrace the idea of being "distinct" and learn how to transform our fear of differences into acknowledgment.

Medium
This piece is on mermaid paper colored and contoured with watercolor paint and watercolor pencil. I chose watercolor as the main medium because water color is very flexible and flowing, which was one of the image I wanted to portray. The typography was done all in hand with a ultra-thin permanent marker. The birds were drawn and colored with permanent marker and black acrylic paint to make the image clearer. The depiction of the people towards the left were hand-printed onto their respective positions using oil and are colored with watercolor markers.
