My Vision of Peace
I think almost everyone knows the legend of the Thousand paper cranes: that whoever folds a thousand paper cranes will be granted a wish. The paper crane became a symbol of world peace through the story of a Japanese girl, Sadako Sasaki, who died from leukemia she contracted from radiation from the bombing of Hiroshima. This crane is my son's prayer to grow up in a world not torn by war.

Medium
Photography. Canon 5D. Origami crane from Liz Shuman, who started the Paper Crane Project some years ago.

Actually I didn't know the specifics of this legend...but it's wonderful to be enlightened about it in this way. And bittersweet as we mark the "anniversary" of the bombing of Hiroshima. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all children held hope gently in their hands as your son does and carried that into the world as they grew older?

I saw this photo on one of the first days I started looking at the Peace Project and it has stayed with me, so beautiful, so touching, and I did not know the story, so having read it, the photo has even more power! Thank you for your offering.

Love your photo - the legend of a Thousand Paper Cranes as I heard it was that the Japanese girl began folding the cranes when she was first diagnosed with leukemia with a wish that it would go away and she would live - she died before she finished folding the 1000 cranes so her friends, family and strangers in her town completed folding the 1000 cranes in her memory - Mazel Tov on getting in the show - look forward to seeing this in person!
